This is the place to post any information about the Crolla Family & any relating families.
The Crolla's were hillside farmers originating from Italy in the mountainess regions of Picinisco & Monte Cassino situated between Naples & Rome. The family came to England around 1872 with lots of other immigrant families escaping the grip of poverty and war which took it's toll in Italy and lead to most fleeing, boarding ships from Italian or English Ports & heading for the USA. In the north of England the construction of the Bridge Water Canal meant the Industrial Revolution had started with it's influx of cotton mills during the mid 1800's. Work was plentiful in Manchester & to immigrants it was thought the streets were paved with gold resulting in the many Crolla's who settled in the Ancoats 'Little Italy' district. Crolla families can also be found in Edinburgh, Liverpool, Yorkshire, Wales & Bournmouth. Like most Italians the Crolla families had two trades Ice Cream Venders by summer & Musicians by winter usually Master Organ Grinders. By the 1950's our Crolla family gave up the Ice Cream Trade & became skilled Terrazzo Tilers, but most of the other Crolla's continued in the catering trades manufacturing Ice Cream, running Restraunts, Deli's & Fish and Chip Shops around the country some of which are still trading today.
